Sabah's SPM 2020 results put it at the top with the best state average grade – 5.34 – in the country, with rural students' lack of facilities and often dilapidated schools not diminishing these candidates' efforts to narrow the passing rate gap between them and the urban students. – The Vibes file pic, June 11, 2021

KOTA KINABALU – The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia passing grade difference between Sabah’s rural and urban areas is narrowing, said Sabah education director Datuk Mistrine Radin.

She said the urban areas scored a 91.12% passing rate while the rural areas scored 90.59% in 2020, a 0.53% difference, compared with 1.34% in 2019.

“There are 211 schools involved in the SPM in 2020, 60 schools located in the urban areas and 151 schools in the urban areas.

In a statement today, Mistrine said the lack of good facilities and prevalence of dilapidated schools have been blamed for the huge gap in the state’s SPM passing rates over the years.

Some 34,454 SPM 2020 candidates received their results yesterday, with Sabah scoring the best state average grade of 5.34 in the country – its best in four years.

Mistrine said Sabah also recorded more students scoring straight As in 2020 with 234 SPM candidates, compared with 198 in 2019. – The Vibes, June 11, 2021
