KAJANG – The National Council of Professors voiced its disagreement with the appointment of vice-chancellors and deputy vice-chancellors of public universities without the consent of the universities’ committees.
Its president and chief executive officer Professor Datuk Raduan Che Rose said such appointments are against the usual procedures and current academic culture.
He said vice-chancellors and deputy vice-chancellors were the main leaders of public universities and their appointments fall under the discretionary powers of the higher education minister, but they have to be assisted by committees to select suitable candidates.
“I have been bombarded with many calls and complaints from academics who express their dissatisfaction with such appointments that do not go through normal channels. Among the complaints are candidates not being selected from the university senate members and who do not possess high leadership modules,” he told reporters at his office here today.
According to him, candidates must have key characteristics such as high academic qualifications and skills in managing large organisations such as universities.
Raduan said the council urged the government to avoid appointments without the consent of the universities’ committees to ensure that those appointed are in the interest of the university. – Bernama, March 23, 2022
