MILLIONS of fans of legendary actor Rajinikanth are eagerly awaiting the release of his latest film, Coolie -  scheduled to be released simultaneously worldwide on August 14.

However, to the dismay of local fans, the country's largest cinema chain, Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), is apparently not going to screen in any of its branches.

This has raised various questions, not to mention that Coolie is one of the most anticipated films of the year, and is expected to record box office collections.

It is understood that the film, produced by Sun Pictures and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is highly anticipated by fans of the superstar actor.

Sources said that Coolie, which is Rajinikanth's 171st film, created a phenomenon among fans as soon as the official trailer was released.

"Unlike GSC, other major cinema chains such as TGV Cinemas, LFS Cinemas, MBO Cinemas, Paragon and Dadi Cinemas have started arranging early morning screenings to meet the demands of fans.

"GSC's failure to list Coolie raises questions among fans and local Tamil film enthusiasts, what exactly happened," a source told Getaran - The Vibes sister Malay portal.

"Everyone knows, Rajinikanth is not just any actor. This film is not a small film either. This is an international film that is definitely capable of generating high returns.

"Rajinikanth's fans are not just among the Indian community. His popularity crosses racial, religious and national boundaries," said the source.

A check by Geratan revealed that fans were disappointment and asked GSC to reconsider the decision.

The exclusive distribution rights for Coolie in Malaysia are held by Malik Streams Corporation. The company's founder, Datuk Abdul Malik Dashtigeer, when contacted, said that the film's distribution was purchased for RM6 million.

"We are targeting a collection of RM60 million for the local market.

"With more than 90 cinemas nationwide participating in the screening, Coolie is expected to create its own phenomenon among local audiences," he said.

Getaran is still waiting for the GSC to respond. - August 9, 2025
