THE city of Kuala Lumpur has been ranked the top destination in Asia for overnight micro holidays, with Penang also securing a spot in the top ten, based on booking data from Agoda for the first five months of 2025.

Agoda’s Country Director for Malaysia and Brunei, Fabian Teja, said cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang offer a unique blend of accessibility, cultural richness and affordability, positioning Malaysia as a regional hub for short getaways.

“Today’s travellers are looking for smart and flexible ways to explore, even with limited time. Micro travel allows people to escape their routines and recharge without needing long leave or detailed planning,” he said in a statement.

“Destinations like Kuala Lumpur and Penang demonstrate how an overnight stay can deliver a memorable and enriching experience, just like longer holidays.”

According to Agoda’s data, Seoul (South Korea) placed second, followed by Taipei (Taiwan), Manila (Philippines), Pattaya (Thailand), Jeju (South Korea), Nagoya (Japan), Kaohsiung (Taiwan), Penang (Malaysia), and Surabaya (Indonesia) rounding out the top ten.

Agoda described Kuala Lumpur as an ideal 24-hour city escape, highlighting its array of attractions such as the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, vibrant night markets, and a dynamic street food scene that reflects Malaysia’s multicultural charm.

The platform noted that micro travel continues to resonate with modern travellers seeking cost-effective, spontaneous escapes with minimal planning. - June 17, 2025
