COMMUNICATIONS Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has called on telecommunications providers to enhance network resilience in preparation for the coming Northeast Monsoon, following a technical field assessment conducted today in flood-prone Kampung Sepagaya, Sabah.
The inspection, led by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), involved real-time network testing with telcos including CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, TM Tech and YTL.
Tests via the MCMC NEXUS application revealed that local communication towers in the area are capable of delivering up to 300Mbps on 5G and 80Mbps on 4G networks, benefiting approximately 3,800 residents.
As of 31 July 2025, internet coverage in populated areas across Sabah has reached 95.30% – a significant improvement from the 73.41% recorded prior to the rollout of the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA).
To maintain communication services throughout potential flooding events, telcos have been instructed to increase network capacity and ensure alternative power supplies, including the use of generators and solar hybrid systems.
Kampung Sepagaya has been identified as a high-risk flood zone during the monsoon season, making continuity of communications infrastructure critical for safety and coordination.
In addition to network reinforcement, two nearby National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI) – in Kampung Sepagaya and Layung Industrial – will remain operational to support digital access and community resilience.
These initiatives align with the MADANI Government’s broader goal of promoting digital inclusion, accelerating socioeconomic development, and advancing national digitalisation.
