IT was a special, fun-filled day for Catholics and their pets around the country as they celebrated the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi on October 4.
Known as the patron saint of animals and ecology, the 13th-century Italian friar is often remembered for his deep humility, his life of prayer, and for founding the Franciscan order.

He is known as the saint of animals because of his profound spiritual connection to all of God's creation, which led him to view animals as brothers and sisters and to treat them with deep respect and compassion.
Legends describe him preaching to birds, taming a wolf, and caring for animals, reflecting his belief that every creature, like him, was a beloved part of God's family.

In conjunction with the feast day, Catholic churches opened their doors to all pets for a special blessing.
The atmosphere at the Cathedral of St. John The Evangelist, in Kuala Lumpur was overwhelming and parishioners brought their dogs, cats, birds and even fishes for the blessing.

Some churches even reported parishioners bringing their pet snakes and iguanas for blessings too.
It was truly a memorable day where everyone had a great time with their furry friends, while also enjoying a host of refreshments. - October 5, 2025
