PETALING JAYA – In a move to control the stray population, the Negri Sembilan state government is making it compulsory for those applying for dog ownership licences to neuter and spay their pets first.

According to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, they are not banning dog ownership, but want pet owners to be more responsible.

Citing an example, Aminuddin said a female dog can give birth to up to eight puppies in a litter, however, some owners would only take care of a few and abandon the rest on the streets where they end up becoming part of the stray population.

Speaking at a press conference after a state exco meeting this week, Aminuddin said this additional condition would be communicated to all local authorities.

“If you want to have dogs, go ahead. But please neuter so we can control the stray population,” he was quoted as saying.

He said the state government had always provided animal shelters in cooperation with non-governmental organisations (NGO) but they can’t manage the stray dog problem. – The Vibes, September 22, 2023
