PENANG is set to unveil two new landmarks along the Light Waterfront development.
The first, located off the first Penang Bridge and next to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, is the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC) while adjacent is the mammoth 88,000 sq ft Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery shaped as a turtle.
Both landmarks are expected to drive the state's services sector, namely in the business travel, tourism and arts as well as culture scene, and a welcome respite to aid the state's manufacturing sector.
Prof. Lin Xiang Xiong, Executive Chairman of Space Arts and Culture (M) Sdn Bhd, is a world-renowned artist and entrepreneur originally from China. Through the company, he invested and built the namesake Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery at an estimated cost of approximately RM100 million.
According to a Chinese belief, a turtle signifies longevity, kindness and prosperity.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the proposal to set up the 88,000sq ft building on a 0.9 acre site was from Lin’s idea to construct an art gallery.
“The art gallery will be strategically located along the shores at The Light Waterfront.
“We believe that this art gallery will serve as a link and platform to foster more art collaborations in the community. Once completed, it will attract a different group of tourists to Penang, such as art enthusiasts It will also strengthen Penang’s position as a hub for arts and culture,” he said.
Lin in turn said that it is a project undertaken to promote art, peace and harmony on a global scale. - October 28, 2025
