THE launch of an electric vehicle (EV) by Perodua later this month will be on the National Agenda, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to him, the Perodua EV is sustainable, environmentally friendly, affordable and has modern and sophisticated technology.
Furthermore, he said, the Perodua EV model was developed by local expertise, especially by Bumiputeras.
"I mentioned that it fulfills the Madani concept, since it is affordable. Production must meet national needs and generate greater economic growth.
"I will instruct the Cabinet that this Perodua launch be made a major National Agenda," he said during the Prime Minister's visit and meeting session with Perodua employees in Rawang, today.
Also present were the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz; Perodua Chairman, Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin and Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad.
During the visit, the Prime Minister was taken to see the Perodua EV model for himself.
He expressed his admiration for the design of the EV produced at Perodua and described the appearance of the vehicle as very elegant.
"The appearance is very elegant. I thought the design was from the west, but it is here, at Perodua. I am confident with what I saw and also the explanation given," he said.
The Prime Minister also assured that he could be Perodua's main 'marketing officer' without any salary in promoting the Perodua EV during his overseas visit.
He said that in the next two weeks he would be visiting South Africa, Kenya and Ethiopia.
"I assure you, I will be Perodua's main marketing officer. There is no fee, no salary," he said, drawing the attention of Perodua employees.
Zainal Abidin had previously stated that the EV model was expected to be offered at a price below RM80,000.
According to him, the EV would use local components for critical parts, with a target of using local components exceeding 60 percent.
Perodua's main target market is the young and small families.
In an effort to increase consumer confidence in local EVs, Perodua also assured that the resale value of the model would remain high, even after many years of use. - November 11, 2025
