FOLLOWING last year’s mania for Red Beauty oranges, a new contender has captured the attention of shoppers this Chinese New Year.

The Yellow Beauty mandarin, imported from China, is being celebrated for its sweeter taste, brighter skin, and firmer texture.

“Unlike Red Beauty, which has a jelly-like texture, Yellow Beauty oranges are firmer and juicier,” said fruit seller Yong Boon Sing, highlighting the appeal of the latest seasonal fruit.

Another variety gaining popularity is the Sakura orange, a hybrid of tangerine and pomelo.

“This gives the fruit a golden yellow colour and a unique pineapple-like fragrance, which customers find interesting,” Yong added.

Priced at RM48 per box for Yellow Beauty and RM68 for Sakura, these premium oranges have proven especially popular among corporate buyers seeking festive gifts.

“In the past, the common lokam variety was usually the top choice for corporate gifts, but this year, companies are more willing to spend on premium oranges and gift sets, typically RM40 and above per person,” he noted.

April Tan, assistant general manager at a fruit and flower distributor, explained that while lokam remains the most widely available and affordable variety, Yellow Beauty has become a hot item this season.

“Besides Red Beauty, there is Papagan, a juicy variety that is easy to peel,” she said.

Despite delays at ports due to stricter inspections on shipping containers, prices have remained stable.

“The situation is manageable at the moment as sales are still slow since the school year has just started,” Tan added. - February 2, 2026
