A 124-METRE stretch between Jalan Tanjong Tokong Lama and Jalan Tanjong Tokong in Penang has been renamed Jalan Shaik Ibrahim - in recognition of the contributions of the former Pemenang president.
The late Shaik Ibrahim was the former president of Persatuan Melayu Pulau Pinang (Pemenang).
Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said this is after requests from residents to rename the road in appreciation of Shaik's contributions to the community.
He said the application to change the name was tabled at the State Committee on Geographical Names (JNNG) and the State Executive Council and was approved on Feb 25.
The late Shaik was the fourth president of Pemenang from 1930 to 1934.
"Shaik used to also be an editor of a local newspaper, and was appointed as a Justice of the Peace by the British in the 1940s.
“The contributions of Shaik's family were continued by his son, Datuk Mohamed Sopiee Shaik Ibrahim, who served as the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) general manager from 1972 to 1974, and by his grandson, Tan Sri Dr Mohammad Noordin Mohamed Sopiee, who is a prominent journalist and a national strategic thinker,” said Zairil.

Meanwhile, some eight kilometres away is the Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Penang, one of the oldest Sikh temples in Southeast Asia.
Under the close supervision of Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo, renovation and upgrading of the place of worship and community centre are nearing completion, with about 80% of work done.
According to Jagdeep, the project aims to bring the building back to its original architectural design while preserving its cultural and religious significance.
“Once completed, it’s expected to continue serving not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of Penang’s multicultural heritage.
“This 125-year-old Gurdwara, which is classified as a Category One heritage site, is an important landmark for the Sikh community in Penang and Malaysia as a whole.
“We are hoping for a soft opening in April during Vaisakhi Day, which will also coincide with the Tamil New Year,” added Jagdeep. - March 18, 2026.
