HUNGARY is looking to increase its collaboration with the state, producing delicious food and in the reinvention of its heritage buildings into vibrant social enterprises with a touristy feel.

Its Ambassador to Malaysia Dr. Sándor Sipos, told Penang state officials that they are keen on more joint education collaboration and government-to-government initiatives in areas of mutual benefit.

Sipos is on a two-day visit to Penang, and visited the Lord Mayor of George Town and Penang Island City Council president Datuk Anthony Rajendran and state executive councillors Wong Hon Wai and Goh Choon Aik.

Sipos would also pay a courtesy call on Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Rajendran said that Penang can pursue exchanges in study visits between the cities of both countries.

Wong, who oversees the tourism portfolio, said that Penang maintains positive relations with European countries with strong foundations and cooperation in areas such as culture, tourism, education, trade, and technology.

He expressed confidence that more substantive collaborative projects could be developed in the future.

He noted that, as one of Malaysia’s most internationalised states, Penang has always attached great importance to fostering long-term friendly relations with Europe.

When meeting Sipos, Wong introduced the upcoming 2026 George Town Festival, one of Penang’s premier annual cultural events.

He explained that the festival was to commemorate George Town’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, a significant milestone. - June 17, 2026.
