RICE Krispies Treats – according to the wise and all-knowing Wikipedia – have been sold by Kelloggs since 1995, however the recipe behind them has been around since 1939 and has long been a homemade treat.

It is in this spirit that Mooshiemellows, a new start-up by sisters Syahirah and Hazwani Mokhtazar is based on. While one can get the store brand, there is something special about eating one of these dessert snacks that is made by hand.

“For as long as we could remember, rice crispy treats were one of the many snacks that ruled our childhood. Sweet, crunchy and chewy– they’re they best kind of on-the-go snacks that brightened up our younger days,” the sisters say.

Like them, this writer grew up eating his fair share of the products (probably to the detriment of his dental health). They were always a reliably tasty and chewy source of sugar.

They are definitely an indulgence, and not for the health conscious. That being said, a little indulgence now and again never hurt anybody.

Mooshiemellows being relatively new, having started only in November, there are currently only two flavours available: The OG and The Choco Loco.

The OG

The classic rice crispy recipe (with a special twist); puffed cereal and melted marshmallows are combined to create a chewy crunch in every bite. For purposes of texture, taste and looks there are sprinkles on top along with actual marshmallow pieces.

It tastes like the stereotypical “birthday cake” flavour, or bubblegum if you will. It’s light, despite the inherent denseness of the snack. For some bites, the taste of salt is more pronounced than others.

For chocolate lovers, this version is just about the same as the OG, but with chocolate having oozed through the cracks between the rice puffs. They have solidified and thickened into the tasty glue that keeps the snack together. Appropriately, in addition to sprinkles there are chocolate chips on top.

Because this is chocolate, there is a richness to the taste that the OG doesn’t have, which reinforces the indulgent nature of the snack. You will feel guilty for eating a bunch of these, but it would have been worth it.
