A MALAYSIAN favourite, restaurant chain The Chicken Rice Shop (TCRS), is celebrating this Ramadan with a new special meal, ‘Ayam Sedap Baq Hang’ available only for a limited time until June 13.

Translated to English, ‘Ayam Sedap Baq Hang’ simply means delicious and the dish definitely delivers in that regard. Seasoned with a unique blend of different spices, the dish is grilled, then coated in a secret sauce, and topped with curry leaves and dried chillies.

In the pictures provided, the dish appears red, but in person the chicken dish is more black, looking like it is coated in kicap (soy sauce). That being said, kicap is not an overpowering element and the flavour is quite balanced. Though there are chilies, it is not especially spicy.

While two pieces are available a la carte for RM16.90, TCRS offers three meal options with the dish, accompanied by other longtime favourites. The 1-pax goes for RM25.90, 2-pax for RM58.90, and 4-pax for RM105.90.

For the purpose of this review, TCRS offered the 4-pax meal, and based on the food provided in terms of quantity and quality, the set is very respectable for a hungry group of four.

In addition to the rice and chicken, there are a number of side dishes, namely Penang Famous Chicken Rolls, Nyonya Pai Tee, Spicy Savoury Ladies’ Fingers, and Penang Rojak. These are all quite tasty, with the rojak being especially good to the point of surprising. One normally expects good quality rojak from roadside stalls, not a restaurant chain.

The meal also came with an additional quarter of a chicken; either roasted, steamed or in soy sauce. This is more of what you usually expect from TCRS, meaning it hits the spot. Pictured here is the roast chicken, which has suitably crunchy skin in addition to the moist chicken.

All the meal options also come with Dino Choco Malts, which are basically iced chocolate malt drink on overdrive, perfect for children and those who never grew up. There is an option to add boba if you’re interested in being trendy.

So whether you’re ordering for yourself or for friends and family, the ‘Ayam Sedap Baq Hang’ promotion offers a satisfying meal with delectable dishes to be enjoyed during buka puasa. – The Vibes, April 30, 2021
