CLIMATE change is often framed as a massive society affecting calamity – which it is – but that framing often makes it look like the individual cannot make a difference. The truth is there are many ground-level solutions that people and companies can do.
For example, electronics such as computers and laptops have their carbon footprint that adds up, given the number of machines being used by companies and by people over several years. These devices are used for a certain period and are then discarded, to be replaced by newer ones.
Rentwise, a local green IT company, has come up with a way to reduce this waste. They do this by remanufacturing retired desktops and laptops so that they last beyond their expected life-cycle.
Rentwise founder and CEO Leanne Ooi speaks on the goals of her company and how they hope to contribute to the fight to reduce carbon emissions.
“Every product has an economic and usable lifespan and it is the same for IT hardware. At Rentwise, we have found a way to stretch product life spans for a further two cycles. After which, the devices are then sent for 100% full recovery recycling. Then, the raw material goes back into the industry for use.
“This is a circular business model and, with our natural resources depleting, is the way only forward for this industry,” she says.
According to Wikipedia, remanufacturing is a form of a product recovery process that differs from other recovery processes in its completeness. A remanufactured machine should match the same customer expectation as new machines.
It is an industrial process by which previously used devices are returned to a “like-new” condition. They are warranted in performance level and quality.
While there are emissions produced from the remanufacturing, it is still a lot less than when a new product is produced from scratch. In a practical sense, it is also a way for businesses to cut costs.
“One key focus and mindset to build is to repurpose equipment and not stockpile equipment that is retired. Only send these out for scrapping when it is no longer feasible to repurpose.”
Rentwise has worked with brands such as Sunway Group, Malindo Air, AIA, Yayasan Sime Darby and others. It is now is looking to provide enterprises with a solution that is not only affordable but also that is sustainable and environmentally friendly.
“In most, if not all, manufacturing businesses, I believe cost becomes more efficient as we build economies of scale, improve quality processes and diversify supply chains,” says Leanne.
On whether there is enough awareness by consumers on the impact of tech waste on the environment – “In Malaysia, awareness is slowly building. But it is nowhere near that of the more advanced economies in which the circular business model is better integrated into daily habits.
“Here in Malaysia, it still requires a more consistent effort from our key stakeholders, like the government, for better awareness to build.”
“Everyone plays a role – to understand what can be repurposed and take the necessary action to ensure this is done.” – The Vibes, May 11, 2021
