THE man who died in an explosion at a private university in Bukit Damansara here has been confirmed to be a Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) student who was undergoing Industrial Training (IT).

Head of the UTAR Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, Professor Dr Chang Yoong Choon, said the victim was a student in his department and was undergoing IT in the last week.

"The victim is a student majoring in Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and is currently undergoing IT for three months.

"This week is the last week he is undergoing industrial training before completing the programme," he told Sinar Harian when met at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) Forensic Department.

Commenting on assistance to the victim's family, Yoong Choon said that UTAR provides insurance coverage to all students covering any accidents, including injuries and deaths.

"The university will manage the relevant documentation and submit the claim to the insurance company.

"The management will also provide full support, including assistance with funeral arrangements," he said.

He stressed that UTAR is committed to assisting the victim's family until all arrangements are completed and will respect the family's decision regarding the management of the remains.

It was earlier reported that a man was confirmed dead while receiving treatment at HKL, while nine others were injured in an air conditioning gas explosion at a private university at about 11.40 am yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus reportedly said that the deceased victim was identified as Soo Yu Juan, 24 years old. – January 13, 2026
