DEEPAVALI celebrations in Paya Besar, Kulim turned chaotic after a firecracker storage container reportedly exploded during a fireworks display.

As a result, 22 individuals were injured, including one who suffered a head injury believed to have been hit by shrapnel from a firecracker explosion while watching a fireworks display along Jalan Paya Besar.

Kulim District Police Chief, Superintendent Zulkifli Azizan said the incident is believed to have occurred at around 12.45 am.

"Initial investigations indicate that the explosion happened after members of the public lit firecrackers. One victim suffered a deep cut to his forehead, while the others sustained minor injuries from flying debris," he said in a statement today.

“Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and all victims were taken to Kulim Hospital for treatment,” he said.
