AS the global pandemic has most of us stuck at home in order to flatten the curve, cliques have found a way to expand their horizons into space with the help of Washington-based video game development studio, Innersloth.

The game Among Us that was published in 2018 reached its heights during this pandemic as everyone explored ways to pass the time at home. This mobile game, that can also be played on your desktop, is another spin-off of the traditional card game Mafia and Werewolf. This multiplayer game’s backstory is located in a spaceship where crewmates (villagers) are tasked with mini-games while the imposter (mafia) goes around killing the crewmates without getting caught. While the game has an embedded chat function, it goes to a whole other level when friends take advantage of apps like Discord, Zoom, Skype and other voice call apps during discussions.

So what’s so fascinating about this multiplayer game and how does it differ from other multiplayer games?

The game brings to life the stagnant card game, Mafia and Werewolf, as players are required to move around the spaceship to either complete tasks or kill. Not to mention, the graphics are adorable! And if you have Rm13 in your pocket, you could even get an even more adorable pet to follow you around the ship.

Players also have the freedom to get creative on how they want to play the game. While you can play the regular mode, which is to find the imposter, many other modes can be played just by changing the game’s settings. One of my personal favourites is Hide N Seek, where the aim of the game is for the crewmates to complete their tasks before the imposter - who will reveal themself at the beginning of the round- kills everyone. Other game modes include using only pronouns as your character’s name, which gets really confusing during discussion or even turning the colours and names off. The possibilities are endless.

Also, Among Us is a game that does not require you to have a gamer-level skill to play and have fun with. In fact, non-gamer people like the Try Guys recently uploaded a video of them playing this among friends, and they are proof that you do not need years of gaming experience to play the game.

The game has also coined up some new slang words, one of it being ‘sus’. If you were wondering where the word came from, now you know. This word started gaining its popularity when Among Us players started using it during discussions when trying to figure out who the imposter is. And in a chat function where you have limited timing, the word sus is simply short for ‘suspicious’. Along with the word ‘sus’, the word ‘imposter’ has also been shortened to ‘imp’. So if you hear that being used around you, you’re just probably behaving very ‘sus’ like an ‘imp’.

Whether you enjoy playing the game or just watching streamers play it for hours, Among Us has definitely reached new heights among us. – The Vibes, November 3, 2020
