FORBES magazine has named infectious disease expert Datuk Prof Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman to its ‘50 Over 50: Asia 2022’ list. The 57-year-old is the Dean of Faculty of Medicine at University Malaya, specialising in HIV/AIDS research.
Adeeba, who is also the chairman of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation, has been vocal about the country’s fight against Covid-19. In the middle of last year she made the news for criticising the government’s sanitisation exercises.
In 2020, she was elected the first Asian president of the International AIDS Society.

Last year, she was appointed a member of the WHO’s Science Council, the voice of scientific leadership that directly advises the Director-General about high-priority issues, and advances in science and technology that directly impact global health.
She established Malaysia’s Center of Excellence for Research in AIDS and is currently the chair of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation, as well as an adjunct associate professor at Yale University.
Adeeba is one of three Malaysians on the list, the other two being acting powerhouse Datuk Michelle Yeoh and artist Simryn Gill.
Other prominent personalities to make the list include US Vice President Kamala Harris, BioNTech biochemist and senior VP Katalin Karikó, and recent Nobel Peace Prize winner Phillipine journalist Maria Ressa. – The Vibes, January 14, 2022
