INTERNET users are angry, even threatening to boycott a famous Chinese beef bun restaurant in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.
This was after a video of one of its workers wearing a chain with a crucifix went viral on TikTok.
The restaurant is a Muslim-friendly outlet, and the furore began after a customer uploaded the video and questioned if it was truly Muslim-friendly in its food preparation.
The video has since been removed.
What angered internet users the most was the management’s reaction. Instead of standing up for their employee, they dismissed him immediately.
The management said the restaurant employed staff from China and Malaysia, all of whom were Chinese Muslims, ensuring the restaurant’s halal status.
Online users got upset over the management’s discriminatory move, saying the employee should not lose his job because of differences in religious beliefs.
They pointed out that there were numerous other restaurants, including fast food chains, that employed non-Muslim staff without any problems.
“Even mamak restaurants employ non-Muslims and it has never been an issue. What next after this? Patients at hospitals demanding to be attended by healthcare professionals of the same religion only?” they asked. - The Vibes, November 20, 2023.
