UMNO will offer legal assistance to its Youth chief Akmal Saleh who is under police investigation, the party secretary-general said.

Datul Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said he had spoken to Akmal on the phone regarding the latter’s detention yesterday in Kota Kinabalu.

“Umno has asked lawyers and party legal adviser Mohd Hafarizam Harun to assist Akmal,” Asyraf said late yesterday on Facebook.

He said Akmal had given police his full cooperation.

Akmal was detained for questioning by the Sabah police as soon as he landed in Kota Kinabalu yesterday morning.

He was released after two hours.

Police said Akmal was being investigated under the sedition law.

Akmal was in Sabah to attend Umno’s Kembara Ramadan programme in Beaufort.

He has been in the news over his repeated calls for Muslims to boycott KK Mart over the the sale of socks bearing the word "Allah". A picture of him wielding a sword has been uploaded on social media.

Akmal said he is due to be questioned today at the Dang Wangi police headquarters. – April 6, 2024.
