MMEA officers injured in high-sea shootout in Sabah

TWO Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) enforcers were injured following a shootout incident on the waters of Kunak around 8.40am this morning.

Lahad Datu MMEA director Maritime Commander Suzanna Razali Chan said boat captain officer Zainal Abad Komel was injured on the right eye and Second Lieutenant Prayrie De Cuella Jimin suffered injuries to both his arms in the gun fight on the high seas with criminals.

She said four other officers did not suffer any injuries.

“Three armed men in a blue boat with an outboard motor opened fire on the approaching enforcement vessel 0.2 nautical miles northeast of Kampung Pangi, Kunak.

“The gunmen then sped off the boat,” she said in a statement in Kota Kinabalu, today.

The enforcers were on a regular boat inspection during the incident.

Suzanna said the MMEA has deployed a Special Action and Rescue Team, aircraft and the Maritime Intelligence Division to track down the suspects while, both the injured officers had been sent in for treatment at the Kunak Hospital. – The Vibes, April 7, 2024.
