PRS Youth chief Snowdan Lawan has dismissed the latest media speculation that there were discussions about a Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) - Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) merger as “sensational reports”.
Lawan, who is also the Sarawak tourism, creative industry and performing arts deputy minister, said since there have been no discussions between the two parties, they are coalition partners in Sarawak’s ruling four-party coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
The reports were merely “sensational media reports”, he said.
He was commenting on a new round of reports yesterday that quoted PDP president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing as saying he is open to a potential merger between the two parties.
Lawan also said PRS is unlikely to “rock the boat”.
The political situation in the state, he said, was conducive now, alluding to the grip the GPS has and the super majority it enjoys in the state assembly.
The four parties in GPS – PRS, PDP, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), the lynchpin of the coalition, and the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) – hold 79 of the 82 seats in the legislature.
Even the one independent assemblyman, See Chee How (Batu Lintang), has become a “GPS-friendly” assemblyman.
