GERAKAN has accepted the Perikatan Nasional (PN) leadership’s decision to field a candidate from Bersatu in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election and will do its part for the coalition, according to Dominic Lau.
The Gerakan president, who had announced the party’s decision to contest the seat soon after it fell vacant, said the decision to field the Bersatu man was based on the agreement of all coalition components.
“We indeed evaluated and selected PN candidates in a professional, fair, and equitable way.
“All parties that have shown the desire to list their respective candidates to run were given time and opportunity to explain the advantages of their respective components.
“On the day of the candidate selection meeting, we made a joint decision to choose the best candidate to represent PN,” he told news portal Malaysiakini.
Lau said his party will support the PN candidate.
“We will mainly attract the support of non-Malays. Gerakan will make every effort to get full support for the PN,” he was quoted as saying by the portal.
In the last Selangor election, Gerakan’s Teoh Kien Hong represented PN.
However, Teoh was defeated by the late Lee Kee Hiong from Pakatan Harapan with a majority of 4,119 votes.
The Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, scheduled for May 11, will witness a contest between four candidates.
They are Pang Sock Tao from PH, Khairul Azhari Saut (PN), Hafizah Zainuddin (PRM) and an independent candidate, Nyau Ke Xin.
The by-election was triggered by the death of the constituency’s three-term assemblyman from DAP, Lee Kee Hiong. – April 28, 2024.
