SELANGOR Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari today criticised the Malaysian Football League (MFL) for the penalties it imposed on the Selangor Football Club (Selangor FC).

In a statement, the menteri besar echoed sentiments expressed by Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, saying the decision was unjust and expressing the state government’s dismay.

He said he was equally angered and disappointed over MFL’s handling of the matter.

Earlier today, Sultan Sharafuddin had expressed disappointment over the fine imposed on Selangor FC for not playing in the Charity Shield match against Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) last month.

“I am very disappointed and saddened by the decisions of the Malaysian Football League and the Malaysian Football Association (FAM), particularly FAM president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin.

“I am surprised and disappointed because Hamidin did not take a serious stance, despite his previous role as the secretary-general of the Selangor Football Association from 1995 to 2013 and is experienced in the state football arena,” he said.

In addition to the fine, Selangor FC was docked three points by the MFL and required to compensate JDT for losses sustained as the host of the opening match and the MFL for losses resulting from the withdrawal from the match on May 10.

“This decision not only disregards fairness but also neglects the humane treatment of players, particularly in light of recent violent incidents involving footballers,” stressed Amirudin.

He also announced a fundraising initiative to pay the fines imposed by MFL on Selangor FC.

He said he had discussed the matter with the Selangor sports executive councillor and the state government had agreed to launch a joint effort.

“This will give an opportunity for all parties, including fans of the Red and Yellow, to collect funds to pay the fine by the MFL.”

Further details on the fundraising effort will be shared soon, he said.

Amirudin also stated that he and the Selangor executive council members would contribute to the fundraising efforts. – June 26, 2024
