THE reaction towards Malaysian Airlines Bhd (MAS) losing some of its staff to SIA Engineering Co Ltd (SIAEC) is reflective of how Malaysian employers have been benefiting from a rigged system, said SPCAAM.

In a statement, the Social Protection Contributors Advisory Association Malaysia said if MAS or any other company are losing workers to SIAEC, they should simply step up their game to attract and retain workers.

International Labour Advisor, Callistus Antony D'Angelus said that Malaysian employers have had it too easy in this regard, where the system has allowed them to depress wage levels through various means and mechanisms and allowed for a systemic exploitation of the Malaysian workforce.

"The reaction to MAS losing workers to SIAEC suggests that no employer should pay higher and accord better treatment towards workers, just so that wage levels can be kept low and exploitative employment practices continue.

"MAS should look inwardly and examine as to why it has not managed to retain workers, instead of blaming the company that has done what is right for its business which in turn benefits Malaysian workers and the Malaysian economy," he said.

Callistus said Malaysian employers have been privileged and entitled, to the detriment of Malaysian workers.

"The minimum wage level is nowhere near what the living wage levels are. Businesses cannot expect to thrive whilst Malaysian workers do not earn a decent wage," he added. - September 17, 2024
