ASSISTANT Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the issue of illegal foreign-run travel operators in Semporna is a long-standing concern.

He said that solving it requires a sustained and multi-agency approach.

He acknowledged the concerns raised by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister (Motac) Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who said possible tip-offs may have led to the failure of a raid against such illegal operators in the east coast district recently.

“We recognise the problem, and it’s not new,” Bangkuai said, calling for comprehensive action.

He added that the local council, along with police and community agencies, have been exploring solutions.

"They know this affects Semporna’s reputation, and all are committed to finding a resolution."

Enforcement against the illegal operators comes under the authority of Motac, not the state.

Bangkuai was speaking at a press conference about the upcoming 29th Regatta Lepa, which is set to take place in Semporna this month.

The Semporna District Office, he noted, has pledged to collaborate closely with law enforcement to combat corruption.

Bangkuai agreed with Tiong that stronger action is essential to curb these illegal operations and admitted that challenges like bribery hinder enforcement.

“Achieving a breakthrough will take a united front, and we need local agencies to stay the course,” he emphasised.

Bangkuai voiced his full support for Tiong’s push for decisive action on the matter.

Separately, Bangkuai announced that the 29th Regatta Lepa will be held on November 23-24.

The event will showcase over 300 traditional Bajau boats, drawing tourists from around the region.

"Regatta Lepa is a powerful symbol of unity and resilience," he said, highlighting its cultural significance.

The festival promises parades of intricately decorated boats, traditional performances, and competitive events like sea fishing and kayaking.

“This is more than just a festival—it’s a chance to put Sabah’s culture on the global map,” Bangkuai added.

The event will close with a fireworks display and a cultural exhibition themed "Wonderful Sempurna."

Bangkuai emphasised that Regatta Lepa’s cultural importance aligns with Sabah’s broader tourism goals.

He encouraged locals and tourists alike to witness this iconic celebration of Bajau heritage.

“Regatta Lepa reflects our community’s spirit and pride,” Bangkuai said. - November 14, 2024
