PARTI Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is considering all options to take the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to court for freezing the party’s fund accounts.

Party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the leadership has discussed with the party’s legal counsel whether a suit can be filed against the MACC and the banks for blocking the party from accessing its funds for over a year.

The former prime minister said that freezing Bersatu’s accounts for over 12 months without charging the party in court constitutes a legal violation and contravenes the Federal Constitution.

“This action is oppressive and unjust. Bersatu is a sizable political organisation. How are we to survive if the government acts this way?" he told a press conference after the party's general assembly.

He said Bersatu has not been charged with any wrongdoing and thus it has the right to challenge MACC’s action.

Earlier, newly appointed Bersatu treasurer Datuk Seri Rina Harun said the party’s financial situation remained critical.

She said Bersatu’s bank account has been frozen since February last year by the MACC, which made it difficult to carry out activities, particularly at the grassroots level.

Last year, MACC froze and later seized several bank accounts related to Bersatu.

The probe is linked to the alleged misappropriation of funds for Covid-19 stimulus packages amounting to RM 92.5 billion by the former Perikatan Nasional-led government.

Bersatu later filed an application in the High Court to challenge the MACC over the freezing of its accounts, accusing it of abusing its powers to conduct “selective prosecution” against PN. - December 1, 2024
