THE driver of a Toyota Vellfire that allegedly struck and killed a 17-year-old girl in Kulai last month has been charged with murder, along with four counts of attempted murder involving four other teenagers.
Choo De Hui, 26, nodded after the murder charge was read to him in Mandarin before Magistrate R. Salini.
According to the charge sheet, De Hui allegedly caused the death of the 17-year-old at Persiaran Indahpura 4 roundabout between 12.20am and 12.33am on Aug 25.
He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of up to 40 years and, if the death penalty is not imposed, whipping of not fewer than 12 strokes upon conviction.
De Hui was also charged with four counts of attempted murder involving four other victims aged between 15 and 20 at Jalan Kiambang 9 and Persiaran Indahpura 4 roundabout at about the same time.
The charges were brought under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine, or up to 20 years’ imprisonment if the act causes hurt, upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lee Weng Hong appeared for the prosecution, while De Hui was unrepresented.
The court fixed Dec 2 for mention pending the completion of chemical analysis and post-mortem reports.
In a separate proceeding at the same court, four teenagers aged between 15 and 17 pleaded not guilty to a charge of jointly and intentionally committing mischief by smashing the rear and front left-side windows of a Perodua Myvi.
They were alleged to have committed the offence at about 12.33am on Aug 25 at the Persiaran Indahpura 4 roundabout, causing losses to Lai Yun Zhe Jeff, 20.
The four were charged under Section 426 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
The prosecution initially sought bail of RM3,000 for each accused, while lawyer K.C. Lim, representing the four teenagers, asked for the amount to be reduced.
The court subsequently set bail at RM2,500 each with one surety, to be paid by their parents or guardians.
The court fixed Oct 28 for mention and the submission of documents.
On Aug 25, Johor police chief Datuk Ab. Rahaman Arsad reportedly said a 17-year-old girl died after she was believed to have been thrown from a Perodua Myvi before being struck by the Toyota Vellfire.
He said preliminary investigations indicated that the incident was believed to be linked to a conflict between two secret society groups active around Johor Bahru. - September 9, 2026
