THE government must find a balance between persisting in the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and ensuring the prudent use of public funds, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said after a decade since the flight vanished without a trace, many questions surrounding the incident remain unanswered, reported the New Straits Times.
"In my view, the government must balance the need to continue searching for MH370 while ensuring that public funds are spent wisely and efficiently.
“The need for answers goes beyond the families and loved ones of the victims; all Malaysians have the right to know what happened to the ill-fated aircraft.
“The Malaysian government will continue to offer full cooperation in the search if it can deliver the long-awaited results," he said.
MH370, which disappeared on March 8, 2014, remains one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history, with various theories and speculations surrounding the incident.
On Dec 20, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said in a press conference that the cabinet has approved, in principle, the proposal from Ocean Infinity to resume the search for the wreckage of MH370 in a new area in the southern Indian Ocean.
He said the ministry is currently negotiating the terms and conditions of the agreement with Ocean Infinity, which is expected to be finalised early next year.
Loke added that the search would begin immediately after an agreement is reached.
"The company's proposal is credible and merits further examination by the Malaysian government as the state of registration for MH370," he said. - December 25, 2024
