THE National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) is stepping in to help Sarawak repair bridges in remote districts damaged or swept away by the recent floods.

Nadma, a federal agency based in Kuala Lumpur, has deployed 12 shipping containers with iron railings and beams from west Malaysia.

These containers are being sent to Sarawak by cargo ships and the first six containers arrived at Miri Port yesterday.

Officials from the Miri Disaster Management Committee received the cargo.

The equipment will be transported into the vast Baram district about 200 km inland to replace damaged and collapsed bridges at numerous river crossings in the northern Sarawak interior.

The Sarawak Public Communications Unit, in a press update, said these items from Nadma for the Bailey Bridges are very important.

"This equipment will be sent to Baram to be installed in areas where the recent monsoon floods damaged bridges.

"The Bailey Bridge components can be installed quickly and will help ensure fast restoration of road travel into the interior," read the updates.

Many remote locations throughout Sarawak were badly hit by torrential rain and floods last month, including Baram.

Many stretches of rural roads were also badly damaged, along with dozens of bridges. - January 9, 2025
