TWO men, one of whom is a senior citizen, were charged in the Magistrate’s Court today for their involvement in trafficking over 275 kg of methamphetamine.
Mohamed Ismail, 68, and Muhammad Amir Ikram Mohd Dzulkiflee, 32, were jointly accused of trafficking the illicit drugs along the roadside in Kampung Sungai Mun, Lipis, at approximately 12:30 pm on February 6.
The charges are related to a significant drug bust that has raised concerns over the growing issue of drug trafficking in the region.
Both men were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which mandates severe penalties, including the death sentence or life imprisonment with caning upon conviction.
Bernama reported, as the case involves the death penalty, the defendants are not eligible for bail, and no plea was recorded when the charge was read before Magistrate Nuur Fakhizaa Abu Bakar. Cases involving the death penalty are under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
The prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Zamharir Muhammad Zuhid, while the defense lawyer Hafizatul Shahirah Jamari appeared on behalf of Muhammad Amir Ikram.
The court has scheduled a mention for May 16 to allow the submission of documents and a chemist’s report that will provide further details regarding the nature of the drugs seized.
The charges come after a police operation that led to the seizure of drugs worth over RM8 million. The arrest of the two men followed a hit-and-run incident on February 10 in Kampung Pagar Sasak, Lipis, which led authorities to the large-scale drug trafficking operation. – February 19, 2025
