THE number of people forced from their homes by severe flooding in Sabah has increased to 4,555, as authorities warn that rising waters in several districts may lead to further evacuations.
The Civil Defence Force, which is leading flood relief efforts, confirmed that evacuee numbers have surged in Beaufort and Membakut, while figures in Sook and Tenom remain unchanged.
Officials say 26 evacuation centres are now operational, housing displaced residents from the worst-affected areas.
In Beaufort, more than 1,300 people remain in relief centres, as floodwaters show no sign of receding.
Membakut has also seen an increase in evacuees, now standing at 872 people. Sook and Tenom, which reported 1,031 and 743 evacuees, respectively, remain stable for now.
Authorities have expanded relief efforts as roads remain cut off due to landslides in Keningau, Kimanis, Tenom, and Nabawan.
Bridges in Keningau remain severely damaged, complicating the transportation of essential supplies to affected areas.
The latest floods come just two months after Sabah’s last major flood disaster, which displaced more than 2,700 people.
With more rain expected, authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert and be prepared for possible further evacuations.
For now, there is no indication of when evacuees will be able to return home, as floodwaters continue to pose a serious risk. – March 11, 2025
