MUSLIMS in Malaysia have been urged to exercise greater caution in their social media conversations, avoiding remarks that could spark division or disrupt the harmony between the country's diverse communities.
Muzakarah Committee of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia (MKI) Chairman Datuk Dr. Nooh Gadot stressed that as Muslims, it is essential to uphold good morals in both speech and writing, as this is a core tenet of Islam.
"Islam is a religion that places great emphasis on good character," Dr. Nooh said in a statement.
"Using words that may hurt fellow Muslims, people of other races, or incite hatred goes against the teachings of Islam, which emphasizes unity and mutual respect."
He also referenced the "Kalimah Toyyibah" campaign, launched by Datuk Dr. Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Religious Affairs, in August last year.
The campaign aligns with the current climate, aiming to foster a society that practices politeness, decorum, and ethical conduct in interactions.
It encourages the community to take Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as a model of high moral values and respectful conduct.
"I humbly call on all Muslims in Malaysia, as well as people of other communities, to be sincere, responsible, and careful when expressing opinions on social media," Dr. Nooh added.
"May every word shared contribute positively to both the Muslim community and the other ethnic groups, and may it not harm the social harmony that has always been a cornerstone of our blessed nation," he added. - March 21, 2025
