EIGHT goats belonging to residents of Kampung Mendom, near Lenggeng in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan were believed to have been attacked by a black panther last night.
Residents noticed the missing goats when they went to feed chicken and ducks in the backyard about 8am today.
"Last night, only my sister-in-law and her husband were at home, while my father was in Penang visiting my sister.
"My sister-in-law, who wanted to feed the chickens, was shocked when she found the goat carcasses strewn about," said the owner.
He said there were eight goats in the pen and all of them were dead.
However, only one kid (baby goat) was eaten while the other goats were just killed.
The owner then informed the village chief, and reported it to the police and Perhilitan (Department of Wildlife Protection and National Parks)."
“They came to conduct an investigation," he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) Mendom, Hanapiah Baba, 57, said that based on the discovery of footprints and investigations at the location, Perhilitan confirmed that the animal in question is a black panther.
"I urge residents to take extra precautions till the animal is caught,” he said.
Perhilitan Director Faizal Izham Pikri, said preliminary investigations found that the leopard panther is suspected to have entered the goat pen through a nearby oil palm plantation.
"There are traces of its footprints around the goat pen area," he said.
According to him, his team will set up a trap in the area and residents are also advised to contact the department if they spot the animal.
