DEPUTY Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof will embark on a working visit to Ankara, Türkiye as part of a first leg to deepen bilateral cooperation following the official visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Malaysia earlier this year.
During the trip scheduled for April 22, Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister (PETRA), will pay courtesy calls on Türkiye’s Vice President, Cevdet Yilmaz, and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, to discuss opportunities for collaboration in the energy transition sector.
These talks build on the recent exchange of Letters of Intent between the two governments.
He is also scheduled to visit GEAS, a strategic energy firm, to identify potential areas of joint ventures in clean energy technologies.
Türkiye is recognised as one of the leading renewable energy producers in Europe and globally, with over 50% of its electricity generated from clean sources such as solar, hydroelectric, and geothermal energy.
Following the Turkish leg of the visit, Fadillah will travel to London to lead the Malaysian delegation at the Summit on the Future of Energy Security, which will take place from April 24 to 25.
The international summit, co-organised by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the UK Government, will bring together global leaders, policymakers, and energy stakeholders to discuss pressing issues concerning energy security, supply stability, geopolitical challenges, and technological advancements.
High-profile participants include UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband, and IEA Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol.
The summit aims to map out the global energy security landscape, identify key risks and opportunities, and discuss actionable strategies to safeguard sustainable and resilient energy supply chains.
“The Deputy Prime Minister’s attendance underscores Malaysia’s commitment and leadership in addressing critical energy challenges, particularly in ensuring energy security and driving energy transition,” read a statement from the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) released today.
The summit will also offer a platform to highlight Malaysia’s energy transition roadmap, particularly the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), and to showcase the country’s efforts in adopting clean fuel sources and green technologies.
The visit is expected to strengthen Malaysia–UK bilateral ties through potential collaboration in policy development, regulatory frameworks, and legislative approaches related to energy security. It will also serve as an avenue for high-level bilateral meetings with energy ministers and heads of international energy organisations.
“These engagements will be fully leveraged to promote Malaysia as an investment destination and provide clarity on the country’s direction and policies, especially in developing a low-carbon energy sector aligned with our national energy transition goals,” the statement added. - April 20, 2025
