DEPUTY Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, has unexpectedly lost his position as Johor Bahru division chief in the latest Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) internal elections.
The Johor Bahru MP was defeated by his challenger, Mohamad Taufiq Ismail, the current Johor chief of Angkatan Muda Keadilan (PKR Youth), in a closely watched contest.
According to official results released by PKR’s Central Election Committee (JPP), Akmal Nasrullah secured 587 votes, while Taufiq garnered 709. The outcome was certified by JPP chairperson, Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
A total of 1,296 ballot papers were issued, out of 1,789 eligible voters for the division.
The result came as a surprise to many of Akmal’s supporters, especially after a recent Facebook post in which he hinted at a likely victory with a comfortable majority.
Akmal, a former PKR Youth chief and now the party’s strategy director, had first been elected to the Johor Bahru division leadership in 2014. - April 21, 2021
