IN celebration of Labour Day, several Cabinet Ministers took to social media to convey their deep appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices of workers across every sector of society. Recognising their pivotal role in shaping the nation’s progress, ministers also reiterated the government’s continued support for workers’ rights, welfare, and opportunities for advancement.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi described the 2024 Labour Day theme, Pekerja Kesuma Bangsa (Workers, the Nation's Treasure) as a fitting tribute to the energy and effort workers commit daily to Malaysia’s development.
“The government remains committed to championing workers’ rights and welfare, while strengthening a fair, progressive and competitive work ecosystem,”Bernama cited Zahid, who also serves as Minister of Rural and Regional Development, saying. “We want every drop of sweat to be rewarded with opportunity, recognition and justice.”
Fellow Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof highlighted the increasingly essential role of workers in navigating national challenges and supporting inclusive, equitable policy-making.
“The contributions, service and ideas of workers across sectors are the foundation of national development and progress,” said Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation. “May we fulfil our communal duties with sincerity and dedication in every task entrusted to us.”
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil acknowledged the indispensable contributions of workers in both public and private spheres, emphasising their role as the backbone of national stability and prosperity.
“The hard work of workers not only supports their families, but also contributes to the prosperity of society and national stability,” he said. “Let us continue to uphold workers’ rights and welfare, while nurturing a work culture that is productive, trustworthy and full of integrity.”
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin paid particular tribute to members of the Malaysian Armed Forces, highlighting their unwavering service in safeguarding national peace and sovereignty.
“Every worker plays a vital role in building the nation,” he said. “This includes members of the Malaysian Armed Forces. Without our patriots who serve the country at all times, we would not experience true freedom and peace.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli underscored the symbolic importance of May Day in honouring workers as the driving force of the economy.
“The MADANI government will continue to adopt strategic approaches to protect workers’ welfare and boost incomes,” he said. Rafizi pointed to several key initiatives, including the Progressive Wage Policy to uplift private sector salaries, increases in public sector pay, and the minimum wage being raised to RM1,700 per month.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, also offered her thanks to workers, while affirming the government's commitment to strengthening protections through institutional reform.
“Malaysia today celebrates the commitment and efforts of all workers who are the driving force of national development,” she said. “The MADANI government, through legal and institutional reforms, will continue to safeguard workers’ rights and wellbeing.”
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali took a broad view, noting the value of workers across all regions and professions—urban or rural, private or public, salaried or self-employed.
“Whether in cities or rural areas, in the public or private sectors, entrepreneurs or gig workers—you are all true national heroes,” he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, highlighted the alignment between the Labour Day theme and the government’s broader goals to build a workforce that is not only skilled, but also anchored in strong values and cultural awareness.
“In conjunction with this year’s Labour Day, I extend my sincere thanks to all workers who have contributed to Malaysia’s success,” he said. - May 1, 2025
