PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has said Malaysia is ready to play a constructive role in easing tensions in Kashmir, if called upon, following the postponement of an official visit by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Sharif had been due to visit Malaysia this Friday, but the trip has been delayed in light of heightened regional tensions after a recent attack in Kashmir.
Anwar confirmed he received a telephone call from his Pakistani counterpart on Monday informing him of the decision.
“I understand the complex situation currently facing Pakistan and pray that the situation will calm down quickly and not escalate further,” Anwar said in a Facebook post today.
“I strongly condemn any form of violence and express full support for the proposal of an independent and transparent investigation to identify those truly responsible for the attack.”
He added that Malaysia remained committed to peace and stability in the region and was prepared to assist if needed.
“Malaysia’s good relations with both Pakistan and India are a valuable asset that can be used to promote regional peace and stability,” Anwar said.
During their conversation, Sharif expressed appreciation for the close bilateral ties and conveyed a desire to expedite the signing of a memorandum of understanding currently under negotiation.
“I reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to accelerate the process,” Anwar noted.
Anwar expressed hope that the visit could be rescheduled in more favourable circumstances: “God willing, when circumstances permit, we will welcome Prime Minister Shehbaz to Malaysia in a peaceful and calm atmosphere. - May 5, 2025
