THE Kremlin has confirmed that preparations are underway for formal discussions with Malaysia, with Moscow describing the upcoming engagement as a matter of strategic significance.
“Yes, we are preparing for talks and for relations with Malaysia, which we greatly value,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday, as reported by Russian state news agency Sputnik. “We will make an official announcement soon.”
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to undertake an official visit to Russia from 13 to 16 May. The trip will begin in Moscow, where he is expected to hold high-level talks, before continuing to Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan to attend the 16th International Economic Forum “Russia–Islamic World: KazanForum” on 15 May.
According to Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra), the visit signals Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Russia and enhancing cooperation through regional and multilateral platforms such as ASEAN and BRICS.
“In Moscow, the Prime Minister will hold high-level meetings with President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to reassess bilateral ties and explore cooperation in areas including trade and investment, agriculture and agri-food, education, aerospace and energy,” the ministry said in a statement.
The leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual concern.
Wisma Putra added that the visit will also serve to identify areas of collaboration under the ASEAN–Russia Dialogue Partnership, in line with Malaysia’s upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025. - May 13, 2025
