THE Ministry of Health (MOH) has withdrawn the notification of three cosmetic products in Malaysia after they were found to contain scheduled poisons, including pharmaceutical-grade substances and mercury.
In a statement issued today, MOH confirmed that Hebe - Micro Rescue Cream (Reduce Acne Scar) and Cloroc Reju Cream were found to contain Clindamycin, Metronidazole, Tretinoin, and Betamethasone 17-valerate—ingredients classified as medicinal compounds requiring regulatory approval and professional oversight.
“Products containing Clindamycin, Metronidazole, Tretinoin, and Betamethasone 17-valerate are classified as medicines that must be registered with the Drug Control Authority and can only be used under the supervision of qualified healthcare professionals,” the ministry said.
The notification for another product, Seri Ayu Secret-Radiant Repair Cream, has also been revoked after it was found to contain mercury, a banned ingredient in cosmetic formulations due to its toxic effects.
“Mercury is prohibited in cosmetic products as it can be absorbed into the body and may cause damage to the kidneys and nervous system,” the ministry added.
MOH has urged the public to immediately stop using the affected products and to consult a medical professional should they experience any discomfort or adverse reactions. Sellers and distributors have been ordered to cease all sales and distribution of the products concerned.
Legal action may be taken against those found in breach of the law. Individuals convicted for a first offence may face a fine of up to RM25,000 or imprisonment for up to three years, or both. Repeat offenders may face fines of up to RM50,000 or five years’ imprisonment. Companies may be fined up to RM50,000 for a first offence, and up to RM100,000 for subsequent offences.
Consumers are advised to verify the status of cosmetic products by visiting the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) website at [www.npra.gov.my](http://www.npra.gov.my) or by using the ‘NPRA Product Status’ mobile application, available on the Google Play Store. May 15, 2025
