PKR’s elections proceeded without any technical disruptions, with both physical and online voting running smoothly across all designated locations, according to party officials
VOTING in the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leadership elections progressed without any reported technical issues on Saturday, with both physical and online polling operating smoothly across the country.
PKR Communications Director Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that there were no major disruptions, including at the two main physical polling centres—the Danga Bay Convention Centre and the Berjaya Waterfront Hotel in Johor Bahru.
“I monitored not only the Johor venues but also other sites including Kota Kinabalu and Kuching,” Fahmi said during a press conference after visiting the PKR National Women’s Congress.
“Thus far, no significant problems have been reported. Most delegates are using mobile data, though some faced weak connectivity. WiFi support is being provided at polling venues,” he added.
Fahmi, who is also the Minister of Communications, noted that official turnout figures had not yet been released but that party monitoring was ongoing.
“I expect the voting to conclude on schedule. Delegates have been advised to vote at designated times by state to ease congestion. I’ll be casting my vote at noon,” he said.
The unofficial results for the Central Leadership Council (MPP) are expected by 9pm, but Fahmi clarified that candidates would be informed directly of the preliminary outcomes.
The official announcement of the new party leadership is scheduled for 2.30pm the following day, as confirmed by the PKR Election Committee Chair, Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
This year’s party election involves 251 candidates contesting for posts at the national level for the 2025–2028 term. This includes 104 candidates for the MPP, 85 for the Youth Wing (AMK) leadership, and 62 for the Women’s Wing.
The congress, which began on Friday, is being described as PKR’s largest gathering since the party’s founding in 1999.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister and PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim cast his vote in person at the Berjaya Waterfront Hotel, accompanied by PKR Advisory Council Chair Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who also voted.
Also present at the venue, which hosts the AMK Annual Congress, were PKR Secretary-General Dr Fuziah Salleh, Fahmi Fadzil, and Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
Anwar took time to greet delegates and volunteers after casting his vote.
Voting for the central-level elections, which includes the MPP, AMK and Women’s leadership, runs from 8am to 5pm. Of the 32,030 eligible delegates, 22,936 are voting online and 9,094 physically.
Besides the Johor venues, physical voting is also being held at the ITCC Convention Centre in Penampang, Sabah, and the Penview Convention Centre in Kuching, Sarawak.
The presidency remains uncontested by Anwar. The deputy presidency, however, is a closely watched one-on-one race between Nurul Izzah Anwar and incumbent Minister of Economy Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli.
Twelve candidates, including four incumbents, are vying for the vice-presidency. These include Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, Negeri Sembilan Chief Minister Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, and Selangor Chief Minister Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, the current Deputy Youth Chief and Political Secretary to the Finance Minister, is uncontested for the AMK Chief post. For the Women’s Wing, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek faces Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail in a direct contest.
At 9.25pm tonight, Anwar is expected to officially launch the PKR National Congress 2024/2025 at the Persada International Convention Centre in Johor Bahru, alongside party leaders and delegates. - May 23, 2025
