IN Kuala Muda, a district long shadowed by drug-related crime, the Royal Malaysia Police has launched a striking new offensive: the 'All Black Militant Jihad Dadah' squad — a name as uncompromising as its mission.

“The All Black Militant Jihad Dadah squad has been mobilised with a mission to combat drug activity at its roots in Kuala Muda,” declared District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan during a press briefing at the Kuala Muda District Police Headquarters (IPD).

Comprising 25 officers and personnel drawn from multiple police units, the newly minted team is being drilled in intensive physical conditioning — not only to bolster their endurance but to sharpen their psychological edge in a campaign that is part crime prevention, part public mobilisation.

“Physical training with me was conducted today at the IPD’s parade ground, beginning with stretching exercises followed by endurance-based field training,” said Hanyan.

The sessions were led by Sub-Inspector Saharuddin Asad, who is tasked with shaping the squad into a high-performance force capable of both tactical operations and community engagement.

The metaphor-laden rhetoric of “militant jihad” may raise eyebrows, but in Malaysia’s policing lexicon, it is meant to convey absolute commitment — a ‘total war’ stance against a persistent societal plague. Yet, this initiative goes beyond boots-on-the-ground enforcement. The squad will be deployed to public spaces such as supermarkets and town centres, not just to patrol, but to listen.

“The squad will also be deployed to areas frequented by the public, such as supermarkets, to gather information related to drug misuse activities,” Hanyan explained.

This hybrid approach — blending intelligence-gathering, deterrence, and community visibility — reflects a broader shift in law enforcement philosophy.

It signals an acknowledgment that the drug war is not won solely through raids or arrests, but through embedded presence, local intelligence, and trust-building at street level.

There is a theatrical element to the name ‘All Black’, suggestive of elite strike capability and no-nonsense resolve. Whether the squad lives up to its image depends on its ability to deliver measurable results without alienating the very communities it aims to protect.

For now, police are urging public participation. “Anyone with information about drug-related crime is encouraged to contact the Kuala Muda IPD at 04-4299222,” Hanyan added.

In a district where narcotics have entrenched themselves in the social fabric, the All Black squad represents a bold new phase — one part show of force, another part test of institutional follow-through.

Whether this jihad against drugs transforms Kuala Muda or merely reinforces old patterns will depend on what comes next: accountability, strategy, and sustained community cooperation. - May 26, 2025
