THE Government has affirmed its full commitment to the aspirations outlined in the upcoming “Tokyo Statement 2025,” which is set to be formally adopted during the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Ministers’ Meeting (APT-MM 2025), taking place in Tokyo from 30 to 31 May.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who is leading the Malaysian delegation, stated that the Tokyo Statement would focus on the development of resilient, inclusive and sustainable digital infrastructure across the region, while embracing technological advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI).
"The focus is not only on infrastructure development, but also on sustainability and our shared goal of ensuring that no community is left behind in the digital age," he told Bernama on Friday.
APT-MM 2025 seeks to strengthen regional collaboration in telecommunications and information technology. The Tokyo Statement will serve as the meeting’s cornerstone, outlining six priority areas: digital connectivity; digital innovation and entrepreneurship; trust and security; digital inclusion and capacity building; environmental sustainability; and regional and international cooperation.
Fahmi added that the Malaysian government under the MADANI framework will also showcase its comprehensive digital governance efforts. These include a firm emphasis on cybersecurity legislation, public awareness campaigns for online safety, and regulatory mechanisms to ensure responsibility among digital platform operators.
"This meeting is a vital platform for shaping collective policies and strategies towards an inclusive, sustainable and secure digital future for Asia-Pacific.
"It also provides a multilateral avenue for cooperation in one of the fastest-growing tech regions, in addition to supporting developing countries in technical, capacity-building and ICT regulatory aspects," he said.
On 29 May, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa led Malaysia’s participation at the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM), accompanied by representatives from the Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
The Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), established in 1979 through a collaboration between the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the International Telecommunication Union, facilitates policy coordination among its member states.
This year’s meeting, themed *Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Sustainable, Inclusive and Equitable Digital Transformation in the Asia-Pacific*, has brought together delegates from 31 member countries and 19 associate members, including regulators, government agencies, and industry players. - May 30, 2025
