MALAYSIANS must remain steadfast in their loyalty to the leadership of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, guided by the principles of the Rukun Negara, to ensure continued national development and unity, a special Friday sermon has emphasised.
Delivered nationwide in conjunction with His Majesty’s upcoming Official Birthday celebration on Monday, the sermon underlined the importance of a loyal and united citizenry in realising the nation's administrative and prosperity goals.
“We must collectively preserve the peace and unity we have built, and reject all negative efforts that seek to undermine this harmony,” the sermon stated.
It further expressed hope that under Sultan Ibrahim’s reign, the pledges enshrined in the Rukun Negara – belief in God, loyalty to king and country, upholding the constitution, the rule of law, and courtesy and morality – would remain firmly rooted in the hearts of all Malaysians.
The sermon, titled ‘Dirgahayu Tuanku: Raja Dikasihi, Negara Diberkati’ (Long Live the King: A Beloved Sovereign, A Blessed Nation), was prepared by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and read by the Grand Imam of the National Mosque, Ehsan Mohd Hosni, during a live broadcast of Friday prayers on TV1.
Touching on Malaysia’s constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, the sermon described the nation’s governance model as one that reflects wisdom and balance, rooted in tradition, law, and Islamic values.
“Malaysia is a unique and fortunate country,” it stated, adding that Islam places high regard on leadership that is just, compassionate and anchored in integrity.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong was acknowledged as not only the Head of State but also the Head of Islam for Penang, Melaka, Sabah, Sarawak, and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan.
“The institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is not merely ceremonial. It is a divine trust from Allah SWT, with the King acting as a guardian of the nation. His role is founded on the concept of ‘Ulil Amri’ – an authority that must be obeyed so long as it does not contradict Islamic law,” the sermon added.
It stressed that the bond between ruler and citizen in Islam is one of mutual respect, loyalty, and prayer for each other’s well-being – principles that uphold a harmonious and respectful society.
“This relationship is built on love, justice, and obedience to Allah SWT. Praying for one another reflects a strong bond between ruler and people,” it read.
The khutbah concluded by highlighting the ideal Islamic model of governance – one where the ruler and citizens care for one another and continuously seek the collective good through mutual affection and blessings. - May 30, 2025
