A 50-year-old woman was killed after being struck and run over in a road accident involving two vehicles along Batu 4, Jalan Utara, late Friday night.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 10.50pm, when the woman reportedly attempted to cross the road and was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

Acting Sandakan District Police Chief, Superintendent K Ramasamy, said preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was travelling from IJM towards Taman Tinosan when the woman suddenly crossed and stood in the middle of the road.

"Due to the short distance, the driver was unable to avoid her and struck the pedestrian, causing her to be thrown into the adjacent lane," he said in a statement on Saturday.

At that moment, another vehicle on the opposite lane was unable to stop in time and ran over the victim, who was already lying on the road.

She was rushed to Sandakan Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead in the red zone due to the severity of her injuries.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing. - May 31, 2025
