TENGKU Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz’s decision to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is more constructive than aligning with the Opposition, said Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, who expressed support for the former Umno leader’s shift to a party within the unity government.
“I feel both sides do not deny his ability. Even the Opposition do not have that angle to attack his record of duties,” The Star cited Amirudin telling reports on Tuesday following an e-bike handover ceremony at Selangor police headquarters.
“We are flattered that he wishes to join PKR, and I have said before that it is better that he joins a friend of this coalition,” Amirudin added. “At least he will still be able to give his support and skills as compared to if he joined the Opposition. That would not be welcomed.”
Amirudin acknowledged that some internal friction may arise from Tengku Zafrul’s move but expressed confidence it could be resolved through “robust discussions”.
Tengku Zafrul, a former Umno Supreme Council member and division chief for Kota Raja, confirmed his resignation from the party last week, along with his intention to join PKR—moves he personally conveyed to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and secretary-general Fuziah Salleh.
However, the move has drawn sharp criticism from Umno Youth leaders and grassroots members. Selangor Umno Youth chief Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin described Tengku Zafrul’s decision as “irresponsible and disappointing”, arguing that since his Cabinet role was secured under Umno’s banner, he should now step down.
“We want the number of ministers (seven) and deputy ministers (five) from Umno to be retained,” Imran added, warning that Zafrul’s departure should not impact the party’s representation in the unity government.
Further criticism came from Kedah Umno’s communications director, Syed Mohd Johan Rizal Syed Unan Mashri, who accused Zafrul of being a “political opportunist” rather than a principled leader.
“Umno gave him the platform and trust, but when tested, he abandoned the cause without proper explanation to the grassroots,” said Syed Mohd Johan Rizal. “In times of ease, he enjoyed the political rewards, but when his political prospects dimmed, he bolted.”
He added that the party does not require “professional-faced traitors”, asserting that loyalty is a core value for true party fighters.
“Umno will not collapse because one or two individuals leave. The party stands strong on the shoulders of thousands of sincere and steadfast members,” he said.
Zafrul, who served as finance minister under successive governments and is currently a Cabinet member, has yet to confirm whether he will retain his ministerial post following his switch to PKR. - June 3, 2025
