EIGHT undergraduates from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) were brought before the Magistrates’ Court here today to face charges of grievously injuring a fellow student during an alleged group assault in a university residential hall late last year.
The accused – Azizul Hakim Norman, Alex Vincent Tarang Anak Ruyan, Harith Haizat Ahmad Jailani, Mohamad Syahmi Solehin Mohd Khairuddin, Muhammad Shazwan Abdul Muti, Muhammad Zam Firdaus Mohmad Nizam, Muhammad Zulhilmi Abdullah, and Mohamad Afnan Hakim Adnan @ Che Yong – aged between 21 and 23, each indicated that they understood the charge and pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Iffah Nabihah Mohd Ishak.
According to the charge sheet, the group is accused of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to a male student, Amirul Daniel Darul Iman Amirfaisal, in a room at the Ibnu Hibban Residential College, UMT, between 1.30am and 5.00am on 15 December 2024.
The charge is framed under Section 325 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 for common intention, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment and a fine, upon conviction.
All eight were granted bail at RM5,000 each with one surety. As a condition of their release, the court ordered the accused not to contact or interfere with any prosecution witnesses until the case concludes.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Azizan Abdullah, while all defendants were represented by counsel from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).
The court has fixed 6 July 2025 for the next mention of the case, during which relevant documents are to be submitted.
The case drew public attention following media reports that the victim, a student enrolled in an accounting programme, had allegedly been subjected to a prolonged physical assault involving multiple students. He was reported to have sustained serious injuries and psychological trauma as a result of the incident. - June 5, 2025
