THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deployed its elite Tactical Unit (ACTS) to assist in a raid at the Cheras residence of a titled businessman on Thursday, amid suspicions of hidden weapons and assets linked to an ongoing sukuk fund misappropriation investigation.
In a statement on Friday, the MACC confirmed the operation was conducted while officers were recording a statement from the individual, a “Tan Sri”, believed to be connected to the alleged misuse of sukuk bond funds for a major highway project in the Klang Valley.
The commission said it acted on intelligence suggesting the existence of a secret vault within the residence, which was believed to contain valuables and firearms.
“MACC received information indicating the existence of a secret vault containing valuables and weapons linked to the sukuk embezzlement probe,” the statement read.
ACTS officers were deployed “to ensure the safety of officers and secure the transport of seized assets to MACC headquarters in Putrajaya”.
The search led to the seizure of luxury goods valued at approximately RM16 million. Among the items seized were luxury handbags worth around RM3 million, branded watches estimated at RM1 million, gold bars, coins and figurines worth RM3 million, diamonds and jewellery valued at about RM4 million, and a luxury casino equipment set estimated at RM150,000.
Officers also discovered a fortified room containing firearms and ammunition. However, no weapons were seized as they were found to be registered under a private security firm owned by the individual.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the value of the seizure and said additional confiscations may follow.
“The total seizure conducted on Thursday amounted to RM16 million,” he said, adding that the individual’s statement recording has been postponed due to health concerns. - June 13, 2025
