FORMER Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been granted permission to attend the hearing in July regarding an alleged order that permits him to complete the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.
Najib's attorney, Wan Arfan Wan Othman, confirmed this information to The Edge following a brief session at the Federal Court today. The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) did not oppose the request. The highest court has previously scheduled July 1 and 2 to consider the AGC's appeal concerning whether there is a case for the courts to evaluate Najib's request regarding the alleged royal addendum and subsequent house arrest.
This follows the granting of leave (permission) in late April. Currently, Najib is serving his prison sentence related to the SRC International Sdn Bhd case, after the apex court rejected his appeal and review request. In February of the previous year, the Pardons Board reduced his original 12-year prison sentence and RM210 million fine to six years and a RM50 million fine.
He subsequently filed a legal challenge regarding the alleged addendum issued by the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which allows him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest. However, in July 2024, the High Court rejected his application for leave, citing hearsay in the supporting affidavits.
Earlier this January, the appellate court, in a 2-1 majority decision, returned Najib's request to the High Court for the merits of the case to be examined.
According to The Edge, Najib has also initiated contempt proceedings against the former attorney general and current apex court judge Tan Sri Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh concerning the alleged addendum.
The application is based on Terrirudin's supposed awareness of the royal addendum's existence. The former Prime Minister asserts that despite being aware of its existence, Terrirudin instructed his officers to mislead the court during the proceedings of his case.
The High Court is set to hear this matter in August.
Earlier this week, Najib's lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah also filed a police report on Najib's behalf against Terrirudin regarding this issue. - June 18, 2025
